Email List Commands

Requesting Information and Subscribing to Lists

To obtain information about lists, an email must be sent to imailsrv@physics.montana.edu, with the subject line blank and the body of the message containing the desired command. The following may be obtained from the list server:

• Get general help about the list-server
• Get specific help about a particular list
• Get a list of all the subscribers to a particular list
• Subscribe to a subscriber list
• Unsubscribe from a subscriber list
  ( Display list names disabled for security reasons)

Command examples

The following examples assume there is a list named "beer" at physics.montana.edu. The commands must be typed into the body of the message like below:-

• To get general help from the list server:
  
  

  TO: imailsrv@physics.montana.edu
  Subject:
  
  Body text: help

  
  
• To display the names of all of the lists on the list server:  (Command disabled)
  
  
   
• To get a list of users subscribed to a specific list, "beer" in this case:

• To get help for a specific list:

• To receive a digest of messages sent to the list, enter a command in the form of set mode digest listname. For example,

  TO:imailsrv@physics.montana.edu
  Subject: 
  Body text: set mode digest beer

• To cancel digest mode and receive messages as they are sent to the list, enter a command in the form of set mode standard listname. For example,

  TO: imailsrv@physics.montana.edu 
  Subject: 
  Body text: set mode standard beer

Commands for the Use of the List Owner (or Moderator)

• To unsubscribe a user from the list:
