Up to the present time, the MSU-Bozeman SPS chapter has been very informal in its activities. Shared social events and mutual assistance in our science and math courses have been our primary focus. Our local chapter of SPS is a member of the national SPS, which is sponsored by the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. We have never charged a membership fee for participation in our local chapter's activities, but we may begin to do so as we become more organised and as we get more active participants from the general student body. You do not have to be a physics major to be a part of MSU SPS. Any MSU student can join our activity.
Membership in the national SPS costs $20 per year and includes a subscription to "Physics Today" and an AIP society of your choice. Opportunities for grants and scholarships also comes with national membership, along with other benefits. If you are interested in becoming a member of the national SPS, you should contact an officer of our local chapter to obtain an application form. There is an honor society associated with the national SPS called Sigma Pi Sigma that has more stringent requirements for membership than the national SPS.
