REU Program Summer 2009

Montana Hall, MSUMontana State University Department of Physics will be offering eight Undergraduate Research Positions for ten weeks during June through August of 2009. These positions will be funded through the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Condensed Matter and LASER Physics.

Projects this year will focus on Condensed Matter and LASER Physics. Project examples include:

  • studies of phase transitions in superconductors and magnetic materials
  • growth of single crystals
  • experiments on magnetic films and nanostructures
  • characterization of defects with resonance spectroscopy
  • film growth dynamics
  • forensic, biofilm, corrosion research using imaging and chemical analysis techniques
  • materials for fuel cells and energy-related applications including feul cell interconnects, materials for magnetic refrigeration and thermoelectrics
  • applied optics and optical storage
  • quantum computing
  • ion-beam studies of solids
