Interests:
My current work is directed towards understanding material degradation mechanisms in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Fuel cells may one day play a major role in energy generation throughout the world. They generate electricity with little or no emissions and utilize fuels more efficiently than traditional electrical generation technologies. SOFCs in particular offer several advantages such steam co-generation and fuel flexibility. One major research thrust is to increase reliability and reduce performance degradation over the desired fuel cell lifetime of several thousand hours. For example, it is know that contaminants in fuels such as hydrogen sulfide in natural gas are very detrimental to SOFC anodes. However, the mechanism by which the performance degrades is not understood. Cathode performance and degradation mitigation is equally important. A collaboration between the Ydzerda physics lab and the Sofie engineering lab allows us to control all aspects of research from fuel cell preparation to testing and material characterization. My work is at the center of this colaboration. I facilitate communication, collaboration, and efficient use of resources by becoming acquainted with all aspects of research from material synthesis to fuel cell testing and characterization.

Grants:
Synchrotron Investigations of LSCF Cathode Degradation (18 months + 18 months, DOE award: $450,000) We combine synchrotron X-ray techniques with laboratory analytical techniques to identify chemical, micro-structural, and/or crystal structure changes occurring in cathodes that explain performance degradation under normal SOFC operation. Methods to solve or prevent degradation will be proposed and investigated. The findings will be used to improve on existing materials and develop future SOFC cathode materials.
