The Applied Optics Research Laboratory is involved in developing primarily laser based sensors to study aspects of the atmosphere important to the Earth's climate. The research emphasis is on smaller sensor systems based on diode lasers, fiber lasers and smaller solid state lasers. Current research involves measurements of water vapor and CO2 as well as aerosols in the atmosphere. The goal of the research is to help develop instruments that will lead to a better understanding of possible climate change due to variations in the atmosphere components as well as to the improvement of weather forecasting models. The Applied Optics Research Laboratory is a collaborative program between the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Physics Department.
