Kamalesh Chatterjey, MS'01 Physics, wrote that he survived the first written qualifying exam at MIT last January; this January he faces part II of the examination. After taking a quick look at Experimental particle physics here, he joined a group in experimental condensed matter physics, led by Eric Hudson. See http://web.mit.edu/physics/people/eric_hudson.htm . Hudson plans to study High Temperature super-conductivity (HTSC) using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). The group is building the instrument, with more features than other groups. The group plans to extend STM to non conducting materials (with resolution comparable to STM, in contrast to conventional AFM), a striking new technique to do STM study of HTSC, and ESR using STM. Kamalesh says that he will make use of all his strengths in analogue electronics. There are existing techniques and circuits for Pico-ampere measurements with high bandwidth, but pushing 10 or even 100 times better is a real challenge.
