General News
It
appears that Physics is getting more political after all.
Recent appointments include members of the Space Management
Committee: Rose Waldon (CEPAC Rep.) and
Yves Idzerda (Faculty Council Rep.), and the CLS Promotion and
Tenure Review Committee: Bennett Link.
John Carlsten accepted the faculty slot on Geoff Gamble's new
Strategic Planning Committee. These are potentially very influential posts.
Geoff Pryde, Andrea, Tom, and Sam moved to Brisbane,
Australia, on December 1, where Geoff took up a new position with Dr.
Andrew White and Dr. Timothy Ralph in quantum computing at The University
of Queensland, his undergraduate alma mater.
Geoff made valuable contributions to the Cone group’s program of
laser stabilization to spectral holes and to Spectrum Lab during his
two-year stay in Bozeman.
Rufus Cone will give a plenary talk at the 32nd
Winter Colloquium on The Physics of Quantum Electronics and has organized
a session on applications of optical coherent transients and spectral hole
burning.
Randy Babbitt, Alex Rebane, and Rufus Cone have been
chosen to organize the 8th International Meeting on Hole
Burning, Single Molecule, and Related Spectroscopies, which will be held
in Bozeman during summer 2003.
David Alexander (former researcher with Loren Acton)
and his wife, Wendy, welcomed a new addition to their family Oct. 23.
Andrew Cailliet Alexander was weighted 7 lbs., 13 oz. And was 21 ¾
inches long. David added that
“Wee David” has been wonderful with the baby and is set to be a great
big brother!
