"The momentum at a national level in the physical
sciences is one of decline. We should be disturbed by this trend – the physical
sciences are the foundation of the microchip industry, the telecommunications
industry, the transportation industry and the petrochemical industry. We are
talking about what fuels our engine of U.S. economic growth – high technology
and maintaining a commanding lead in a 21st century global economy."
Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
In discussing funding trends for the DOE'S Office of Science

GENERAL NEWS
At the AAPT Winter
Meeting Larry Kirkpatrick finished his four-year term in the presidential chain.
Not all of his grey hair is due to his term in office.
Bill Hiscock and Ken Krane (Oregon State) will serve as external reviewers of the Physics Department at Utah State University.
SPACE PUBLIC OUTREACH TEAM: The Montana Space Grant Consortium is starting a new education/public outreach program called the Space Public Outreach Team (SPOT). Similar in design to its successful Mars Public Outreach Program of a few years ago, this project will send undergraduate (and graduate) students to Montana schools to make presentations about space science topics. With the help of the Solar Physics Research Group, the first presentation, "Living With a Star" will be ready to travel to schools sometime in March. For more information about the program, please refer questions (and interested students!) to Mike Murray, 994-7309, murray@physics.montana.edu
Gary Bohannan started work at Wavelength Electronics, Inc. (Bozeman) in January. "I love the job and the people are great," Gary says. Congratulations Gary!

STUDENT and ALUMNI NEWS
Tim Heumier (PhD '93) writes that he has moved to Thousand Oaks, CA, "I'm involved in optical design for product
development in metro optical telecom. The company is a 1.5 year old startup founded by a UCLA professor.
The company so far has begun to make waves by developing high-speed chips for telecom in CMOS. However, we are moving
into other areas that will showcase the chips. The work involves many different arenas, and certainly my physics
background is valuable because there are so many different issues to contend with. The
knowledge I gained while consulting at Telect [Spokane, WA] has proved quite valuable. Specifically,
I learned about optical fiber communications, one of the very hottest areas around...
I got interviews in spite of the fact that I had very little industrial experience. Just the fact that I knew something
about optical telecom such as dispersion issues, bit error rate, and other buzzwords, gave an industry short of
experienced help something to grasp. MSU Physics was a great experience for me. Thanks to all!"
