  • I'm very pleased to report that our own Yves Idzerda has been elected as the "Sciences" (our College gets two representatives -- one for "Letters" and one for "Sciences") representative to the University Graduate Council.   • Professor Rufus Cone has been selected as one of the four initial College of Letters and Science Distinguished Professors. Congratulations to Rufus on this well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to MSU, physics, and the department. (08/06)

  • Professor David McKenzie and graduate student Sabrina Savage will be observing the Sun with Hinode's X-ray telescope over the next three years. Hinode, the latest orbiting solar observatory, was successfully launched Sept. 22. The involvement of the MSU Solar Physics group in this international mission builds on the group's legacy of solar observations with the Yohkoh and TRACE satellites. Full story here.   10/18/06

  • MEROPE, the first satellite built in Montana was destroyed Wednesday when the Soviet-era intercontinental ballistic missile it was riding on crashed shortly after liftoff in Kazakhstan, details here. (07/06).

      Creative Scholarship and Teaching
    • Rufus Cone has been selected to receive the MSU Meritorious Science/Technology Award
    • John Carlsten has been selected to receive the MSU President's Award for Excellence in Teaching
    • Neil Cornish has been selected to receive the College of Letters and Science Meritorious Research Award
    • Jeremy Gay has been selected to receive the College of Letters and Science Employee Excellence Award
    • Brandon Anderson has been selected as the MSU Rotary Student of the Month ("April" is the "Science" month)!  (04/06)
