New Faculty

Galina Malovichko, Associate Professor, an expert in the field of defect-related properties of optical materials and characterization of defects, came to us from the University of Osnabrük, Germany.  Galina received her PhD in 1987 from the Institute for Problems of Material Sciences, Kiev, Ukraine.

John Neumeier, Associate Professor, arrived mid-August from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL.  According to John "One of my main concentrations is the synthesis of novel condensed matter materials, including single crystal growth."  John's PhD in Physics came from Univ. of CA, San Diego, 1990.

Brian Woodahl was appointed as full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for the current academic year.  His background is in theoretical particle physics (Purdue, PhD. '99).  In addition he holds two engineering degrees and he has vast experience in computational physics.

We extend a warm welcome to these members of the MSU Physics family.

General News

New Circuit Analysis Software Acquired for Physical Measurements II.  The Physics Department recently negotiated a purchase agreement with Electronics Workbench to acquire a ten-seat license for the educational version of their MultiSim 2001 and UltiBoard 2001 suite.  The software has been installed in the Physics Department computer lab and will be used in the Physical Measurements II course, Fall 2002.

Dustin Rich, a Mechanical Engineering major/Physics minor, has returned for his senior year and will continue optics and solid modeling work in the Cone/Sun group along with a spectroscopy experiment.  Dustin spent the summer doing an internship at Boeing in Everett, WA, where he worked in 777 Tool Engineering and was involved in both design and production shop liaison activities.  The internship provided valuable experience with engineering and business practice in the aviation industry.  Dustin will give a poster at the OpTec Meeting.

Cooper McCann, a Junior in Physics, carried out a project on interferometric characterization of vibration with Charles Thiel, Yongchen Sun, and Rufus Cone.  Cooper will present a talk on this at the OpTeC Meeting.

Awards Honors and New Positions

This fall John Carlsten will have a 50% position with the National Science Foundation as a Program Manager in the Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics Program in the Physics Division.  The work for NSF will mostly be done off-site, on-line, from Bozeman, with occasional trips to Washington DC as needed.  Teleconferencing capabilities at the Burns Telecommunication Center will be used for the NSF Senior Staff Meetings.

Sean Kirn, Physics undergrad, has assumed responsibilities as project leader for the student balloon project BOREALIS.

Ahmed Khallaayoun has assumed responsibilities as project leader for SPOT (Space Public Outreach Team).  An MSGC activity, whose trained MSU students offer a variety of presentations to K-12 classrooms across the state, including ones on Mars missions (this grew from MPOP) and one on NASA's Sun-Earth Connection program.
