Tree struck by lightning
  • This cottonwood tree was struck by lightning in a summer storm that passed over the campus. A woman carrying an umbrella and walking down the mall at the center of campus 2 blocks away reported a painful tingling feeling in the little finger of her umbrella hand right before she heard the boom from the lightning strike.
  • A year after this happened, the tree was in poor health and had to be cut down. It used to stand in line with 2 other cottonwood trees just north of the tennis courts.
