- Charge the pail with a charged rod until the electroscope vane is horizontal.
- Use the proof plane to transfer charge from the outside of the pail to the other electroscope. No charge can be transferred from the inside of the pail.
- The vane under the pail shows the charge being removed as charge accumulates on the other electroscope.
